Hello! I’m a freelance data scientist with an interest in web development. When I’m not freelancing, I build data driven web-apps like PipPip.email and MoneyBar.nl.

As a data-scientist I specialise in finance and blockchain domains. I’m an expert python developer, and there’s a tonne of things I still want to learn about web development and data science. I enjoy working with Django, Wagtail, TensorFlow, and Plotly in particular. I designed this blog using pelican and tailwind CSS.

Here is a brief history of my career so far, there’s more information on my experience page:

In 2020 I succeeded in building awesome web apps, and failed horribly at marketing them.

In 2019 I began freelancing as a data specialist at Uber and as a senior Data Scientist at Shell

In 2018 I joined a Blockport, a startup Cryptocurrency exchange, as their only Data Specialist. I built the tools we needed to answer questions and collect metrics.

In 2017 I qualified as a chartered accountant and became a financial consultant.

In 2014 I moved to London and began work as an external financial auditor for banking clients. I also began qualifying as a chartered accountant with the ICAEW.

In 2010 I began my PhD researching granular materials at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, Austria.

In 2009 I graduated from Edinburgh University with a masters degree in Civil Engineering. The Great Recession had arrived and I found a job at Starbucks. This made me curious about finance and I resolved to one day understand how banks work.

You can find me on LinkedIn and on GitHub.

Information about my work researching silos and granular flows can be found here. If you’d like to know when I publish something new on this site, please subscribe for updates. I don’t send emails as often as I make new posts.

I think that this is generally good advice, and this is a useful set of tools. — @johnmathews
