Thanks for visiting my blog. I’m a freelance data specialist with a background in finance and numerical modelling. If you’d like to speak about becoming a data driven organisation, creating robust data pipelines, data visualisation, or predictive analytics then please get in touch! I prefer working remotely and working across timezones is not a problem. I’m also an aspiring machine learning engineer.

Since 2018 I’ve been working near Amsterdam. I’m currently feelancing with Uber as an analyst and before that I worked at a fintech startup as the only data specialist, creating and managing pipelines, dashboards and analytics for stakeholders across the business.

In 2017, I qualified as a chartered accountant and became a financial consultant. I began working with clients working on disintermediation problems and created my consultancy.

In 2014, I moved to London and began work as an external financial auditor for banking clients. I also began qualifying as a chartered accountant with the ICAEW.

In 2010, I began my PhD researching granular materials at the BOKU in Vienna, Austria.

In 2009, I graduated from Edinburgh University with a masters degree in Civil Engineering. The Great Recession had arrived and I found a job at Starbucks. This made me curious about finance and I resolved to one day understand how banks work.

I’m on AngelList and LinkedIn, and my most recent projects are on GitHub. My CV is available to download.

Information about my work researching silos and granular flows can be found here. If you’d like to know when I publish something new on this site, please subscribe for updates. I don’t send emails as often as I make new posts.

I think that this is generally good advice, and this is a useful set of tools. — @johnmathews
